The ASWB Clinical exam in 2026: a plain guide

The ASWB Clinical exam is the licensing exam most US states use for clinical social work licenses such as the LCSW. Since August 3, 2026 it has 122 multiple-choice questions in two sections of 61, with two hours for each section and three content areas. This guide covers the format, what is tested, how scoring works, how to register and what happens if you need to retake it.

Everything here comes from the Association of Social Work Boards' own 2026 ASWB Examination Guidebook (PDF) and aswb.org. ASWB can change its rules, so always check the current guidebook before you book. We are not ASWB and we are not affiliated with it.

What changed in August 2026

ASWB launched new versions of all its social work licensing exams on August 3, 2026, based on new 2026 blueprints. The main changes for the Clinical exam:

  • Fewer questions, same time.

The exam went from 170 questions (150 scored) to 122 questions (110 scored). The time limit is still four hours.

  • Two timed sections.

The exam is split into two sections of 61 questions, with two hours for each.

  • Three content areas instead of four.

The new areas are Values and Ethics, Assessment and Planning, and Intervention and Practice. Values and Ethics has the largest share.

  • More three-option questions.

ASWB says the new exams use a higher proportion of questions with three answer options. Some questions still have four.

ASWB said fees, registration and scheduling did not change. Sources: ASWB: New social work licensing exam begins August 3 and ASWB: 2026 blueprints.

Timing and breaks

The exam gives you 240 minutes for 122 questions, which is just under two minutes per question. ASWB notes that nearly all test-takers finish with time to spare.

How the time works:

  • You have two hours for each 61-question section. If time runs out in a section, your answers are recorded and you cannot go back to that section.
  • If you finish a section early, you review and submit it. After that, you cannot return to it.
  • After section 1 you can take a scheduled break of up to 10 minutes, during which the exam clock stops. Unused break time does not carry over, and if you take longer than 10 minutes, the extra comes out of your exam time.
  • You can take unscheduled breaks at any time by raising your hand, but the clock keeps running.
  • Leftover time from section 1 does not carry over to section 2.

A practical pacing target is to finish your first pass through each 61-question section in about 105 minutes (a little under 1 minute 45 seconds per question). That leaves about 15 minutes per section to go back to flagged questions.

The Clinical content outline

The Clinical exam is built from a published content outline with three broad content areas. Each area is broken into competencies, and each competency into knowledge statements. ASWB publishes the full outline, with recommended references, in the guidebook and on its content outlines page.

36% of the exam

I. Values and Ethics

  • IA. Ethical principles and responsibilities
  • IB. Ethical service delivery
  • IC. Diversity and social justice

32% of the exam

II. Assessment and Planning

  • IIA. Assessment concepts
  • IIB. Assessment methods and techniques
  • IIC. Assessment practices

32% of the exam

III. Intervention and Practice

  • IIIA. Practice concepts
  • IIIB. Intervention methods and techniques
  • IIIC. Practice evaluation and research
  • IIID. Supervision and administration

On the 110 scored questions, that works out to roughly 40 Values and Ethics questions and about 35 in each of the other two areas. Exact numbers vary a little between exam versions.

What this means for studying. Values and Ethics is now the biggest single area. Know the NASW Code of Ethics well, especially confidentiality and its limits, informed consent, dual relationships, conflicts of interest, professional boundaries and duties when a client is at risk. Assessment questions often test what to do first: risk, safety, medical causes and the client's own view of the problem tend to come before everything else.

Types of questions

ASWB writes questions at three levels of thinking:

  • Recall:

remembering a fact, such as a definition or a diagnostic criterion.

  • Application:

using what you know in a specific situation.

  • Reasoning:

weighing a scenario, the options and professional judgment to choose the best action.

The Clinical exam leans toward application and reasoning. Many questions describe a client situation and ask what the social worker should do first, next or best. Several options may be things a social worker could reasonably do; the task is to pick the one that comes first or fits best given the details in the question. Read the last line of the question carefully, because the qualifying word decides the answer.

How scoring works

  • Scores are reported as pass or fail.
  • Only the 110 scored questions count. The 12 pretest questions do not affect your result.
  • Your score report shows the number of questions you answered correctly and the number needed to pass.
  • The number needed to pass varies slightly between versions of the exam. ASWB makes statistical adjustments so that every version has the same overall difficulty. This is why there is no single fixed "passing score" for the Clinical exam.
  • There is no penalty for a wrong answer, so answer every question.
  • You see your result on screen at the end of the exam. An unofficial score report appears in your ASWBCentral account about 24 hours later.
  • If you do not pass, your report shows how many questions you got right in each content area.
  • ASWB sends official results to your state board. Boards can take from two weeks to two months to process a score.
  • A pass is valid in every US state and Canadian province that uses the same exam category.

How to register

The order matters. Most candidates follow these three steps.

  1. Step 1 Apply to your state board

Apply for your license with the social work board in the state where you want to practice, pay its fees and get approval to take the exam. If you need nonstandard testing arrangements (for example extra time because of a disability or health condition, or English as a second language arrangements), request them through ASWB before you register. In Colorado, Maine, Texas and Utah, applicants first apply for exam preapproval with ASWB Licensing Services, then apply for licensure after passing.

Find your board: ASWB jurisdiction online resources. Compare requirements: ASWB find and compare license requirements. About nonstandard arrangements: ASWB nonstandard testing arrangements.

  2. Step 2 Register and pay with ASWB

Register through ASWBCentral. The Clinical exam fee is US$260. ASWB accepts Mastercard, Visa and Discover, and exam fees are nonrefundable. Register under your name exactly as it appears on your ID. ASWB emails your Authorization to Test within two business days. It is good for one exam and may be valid for up to one year, or less if your board sets an earlier date. You can get no more than one extension of up to six months per registration.

  3. Step 3 Schedule with Pearson VUE

There are no fixed test dates; you book your own appointment at a Pearson VUE test center, online or by phone. You can test at any Pearson center, and your score still goes to your board. You should get a confirmation email within 24 hours. See Pearson VUE: ASWB and ASWB: Exam appointments.

Canceling or rescheduling. You can cancel or reschedule at least 24 hours before your appointment through ASWBCentral or by phone, with no extra fee. If your appointment is on a Monday or Tuesday, you must call before 7:00 p.m. Eastern on the Friday before. If your arrangements include assistive personnel, ASWB asks for two business days' notice. Missing the appointment or arriving late usually means losing the exam fee. Check the guidebook for the current rules.

Exam day

  • Arrive 30 minutes early.

Late arrivals can lose their appointment and fee.

  • Bring two original forms of ID

, one from Pearson's primary list and one from the secondary list. Without proper ID you cannot test and you forfeit the fee. Keep your photo ID with you, including on breaks.

  • Expect strict security.

Personal items must be stored according to test center rules or left in your car. You cannot leave the test center during the exam, including on breaks.

  • Report problems right away

to test center staff, and to ASWB through ASWBCentral within two business days.

See ASWB: On exam day.

Retaking the exam

  • You must wait at least 90 days before retaking.
  • If your score was within 10 points of passing and your state allows it, you can ask for a waiver of the 90-day wait. You must wait 24 hours after your exam before you request one.
  • You retake the whole exam. You cannot retake only some content areas or combine scores from different attempts.
  • You register and pay the fee again, and you may need your board's approval. Contact ASWB Candidate Services to check.
  • Some boards limit how many times you can retake. Check your board's rules.

See ASWB: If you fail the exam.

Practicing for the exam

ASWB sells its own online practice test for US$85. It is a full 122-question test made of retired exam questions, with rationales, and you can use it for 30 days from launch (or until ASWB receives your exam score, if sooner). Only registered exam candidates can buy it.

Our four unofficial practice exams use the same 2026 structure and weighting, at $9.99 for all four. They are original questions, not ASWB material. You can try 10 questions free first.

A sensible order for most people:

  1. Read the guidebook's content outline and note the areas you feel weakest in.

  2. Take a full practice exam to get a baseline and practice your pacing.

  3. Study your weak areas from good sources (see our study resources).

  4. Take further full practice exams, ideally under timed conditions, and review every rationale, including for the questions you got right.
